Silence - 50 word story

The models had to spend a month standing round the yard as the stonecarvers worked on their faces. Bored, they started to share their hopes and dreams. Told secrets that, later, kept on being shouted out to anyone who bothered to listen. Like a nightmare, they couldn’t shut themselves up.

Stone speaks. Tells you what it is. What it must be. Marcus holds his ear close to the hewn stone block. He listens. Then he takes up his hammer and his chisels and he cuts away the stone accretions of ages and takes the stone back to what it is.

Marcus is gifted. Of that there’s no doubt. He sculpts tears and heartbeats and sighs. But he is mad too. Thinks the stone block in his studio speaks to him, telling him what it is. I hear nothing, stone deaf, hearing only the settling of dust – soft, like silence almost.

There was a time when facial hair on women was the norm. Since the impact, it has been a rarity, transforming just the lucky few. Even historical monuments depicting artful feminine beards were smashed. Today, no amount of make-up can replicate the loss of texture or colour of bristles.
