There's a lovely little story, Gargoyle, by Joyce Carol Oates up at Narrative magazine. She is an expert at creating sinister voices in so little words.

Great story. I love sinister! Very poetic with its repetitions which really add power. J.C.O. has been on my must read radar for ages - she has moved up a place now!
